Gesundheitswesen in Nepal aufzubauen
🇩🇪 Der Workshop in Kathmandu dauerte fünf Tage. Das Team will die Ergebnisse bei der größten MRT-Konferenz ISMRM im Frühjahr 2027 international vorstellen und plant schon die Sommerschule 2027.
🧲 Am Gerät selbst geht die Arbeit weiter: Als Nächstes kalibrieren die Beteiligten es und nehmen das erste Bild auf. Nepalmed finanziert die dafür noch nötigen Elektronikteile mit.
IMAGINE lief in diesem Jahr weltweit an sechs Standorten, von Montreal bis Kapstadt, mit insgesamt rund 90 Teilnehmenden, die zusammen sechs Kleintier-MRT-Systeme aufbauen sollten. Kathmandu war 2026 zum ersten Mal einer davon, und die eingereichten Abstracts tragen die Ergebnisse jetzt in genau dieses internationale Netzwerk. 👍🏻
Projektleiter Dr. Surendra Maharjan (Weill Cornell Medicine, New York City) treibt das gemeinsam mit den Koordinatorinnen vor Ort, Usha Poudel Lamgade und Sweta Joshi, voran. NIC-Standortleiter Sagar Khandka ist ebenfalls dabei. Alle vier wollen das Programm 2027 wiederholen und die nächste Gruppe an Techniker:innen und Radiolog:innen ausbilden.

🇬🇧 The workshop in Kathmandu lasted five days. The team plans to present its results internationally at ISMRM, the largest MRI conference, in spring 2027 – and is already planning the 2027 summer school.
🧲 Work on the scanner itself continues too: next, they'll calibrate it and capture its first image. Nepalmed is co-financing the electronic parts still needed for that.
IMAGINE ran at six sites worldwide this year, from Montreal to Cape Town, with around 90 participants aiming to build six preclinical MRI systems between them. Kathmandu was one of those sites for the first time in 2026, and the submitted abstracts now carry its results into exactly that international network. 👍🏻

NIC site director Sagar Khandka is in it too. All four want to run the program again in 2027, training the next group of engineers and radiologists.

ISMRT Nepalese National Chapter
🇩🇪 Im August ist am National Innovation Center (NIC) in Kathmandu ordentlich geschraubt worden. 🛠️
Vorher lernten 44 Menschen sechs Wochen online, wie man einen MRT-Scanner komplett selbst baut. Die 18, die es nach Kathmandu geschafft haben, bauten dort am NIC in Kirtipur einen Prototypen, ein sogenanntes Kleintier-Niedrigfeld-MRT. 🧲
Warum das wichtig ist:
In Nepal gibt es nur rund 60 MRT-Geräte für 30 Millionen Menschen, meist nur in den großen Städten. MRT rettet Leben, ist aber teuer und technisch aufwendig, schon das starke Magnetfeld braucht spezielle Räume.
Die Sommerschule "Imaging Without Borders" (IMAGINE) will genau das ändern: Sie bildet MR-Physiker aus, die MRT-Scanner mit handelsüblichen Teilen wie Magneten und Spulen selbst bauen können.
Unser Mitglied Ole Hensel hat den Kontakt zwischen NIC und CAMERA hergestellt, Matt Drews brachte MRT-Wissen ein. Nepalmed hat 2.000 Euro für die Magnet-Komponenten beigesteuert.
Kleintiere können damit noch nicht untersucht werden, ganz fertig ist das Gerät noch nicht. Was als Nächstes passiert, gibt’s im nächsten Post.

🇬🇧 In August, things got hands-on at the National Innovation Center (NIC) in Kathmandu. 🛠️
Before that, 44 people spent six weeks learning online how to build an MRI scanner from scratch. The 18 who made it to Kathmandu then built a prototype, a so-called small-animal low-field MRI, at the NIC in Kirtipur. 🧲
Why it matters: Nepal has only about 60 MRI scanners for 30 million people, mostly in the big cities. MRI saves lives, but it's expensive and technically demanding, and its strong magnetic field alone means it needs specially built rooms.
The "Imaging Without Borders" (IMAGINE) Summer School wants to change exactly that: it trains MR physicists who can build MRI scanners themselves, using off-the-shelf parts like magnets and coils.
Our member Ole Hensel connected NIC with CAMERA, and Matt Drews brought MRI expertise. Nepalmed contributed 2,000 euros for the magnet components.
It can't scan small animals yet, and the device isn't fully finished. We'll show you what's next in our following post.

🇩🇪 In Chargare im Solukhumbu fließt jetzt sauberes Trinkwasser durch die neuen Leitungen. 💦
Vor Kurzem hat die Dorfgemeinschaft gemeinsam mit der Schule das Wasserprojekt feierlich in Empfang genommen.
Lange hatten die Menschen dort kein verlässliches Trinkwasser. Jetzt ist die Erleichterung groß.
Das Projekt dauerte länger als geplant, vor allem wegen der Monsunzeit und schwierigem Wetter. Thile, unser Projektpartner vor Ort, schrieb uns dazu:
„Im Namen der Gemeinschaft möchte ich Nepalmed in Deutschland aufrichtig danken, für die wertvolle Unterstützung, die dieses Projekt möglich gemacht hat. Die Menschen sind außerordentlich glücklich und dankbar. Vielen Dank für Ihre fortwährende Unterstützung und Ihr Engagement für unsere Gemeinschaft.“

🇬🇧 In Chargare, Solukhumbu, clean water now runs through the new pipes. 💦
The community and the local school recently held the official handover of the project.
For years, people here had no reliable drinking water. The relief is real.
The project took longer than planned, mostly due to the monsoon and difficult weather. Thile, our partner on the ground, wrote to us:
"On behalf of the community, I want to sincerely thank Nepalmed in Germany for the valuable support that made this project possible. The people are extremely happy and grateful. Thank you for your continued support and commitment to our community."
