Gesundheitswesen in Nepal aufzubauen
#NepalmedBirgitontour 🇩🇪 6 Uhr morgens wartet der Jeep in Kathmandu auf uns. Solu liegt im Osten Nepals und wer dort hinwill, muss Zeit mitbringen.
Die Fahrt dauert knapp 9 Stunden – es geht zunächst weit nach Süden, dann am Sunkoshi-Fluss entlang, nach Norden auf schmalen Sträßchen, Serpentinen, bergauf und bergab. Vor zwei Jahren haben gewaltige Erdrutsche einen guten Teil der Straße am Sunkoshi zerstört. Seitdem fährt man dort über holprige Schotterpisten.
Durchgeschwitzt von der Hitze im Sunkoshi-Tal kommen wir in Phaplu in der gemütlichen Numbur Guest House an. Hier oben, auf etwa 2.000 Metern, sind es höchstens 15 Grad.
Bereits in KTM haben wir uns mit SP Kalaunee getroffen, dem Entwickler eines elektronischen Patientenaktensystems (EHR), das bereits in Bayalpata und Amppipal im Einsatz ist. Unser Ziel für Solu: dieses System auch hier einzuführen und die Health Posts digital mit dem Phaplu Hospital zu verbinden.
Health Post Worker dürfen Medikationen nicht eigenständig anpassen, das liegt beim Krankenhaus. Mit einer digitalen Patientenakte könnte das Hospital dem Health Post aber direkt Anweisungen schicken. Patienten bliebe ein langer Weg erspart.
Umgesetzt werden soll das gemeinsam mit Nyaya Health Nepal. Ob das Phaplu Hospital mitzieht, ob die Health Posts bereit sind, das werden die nächsten Tage zeigen.

🇬🇧 Saturday, 6 a.m. Kathmandu. Eight to nine hours by jeep to Phaplu along the Sunkoshi River, through landslide-damaged roads and endless switchbacks. We arrive around 5 p.m. at 2,000 metres, sweaty from the valley heat, stepping into 15°C air.
The journey is long, but the plan makes it worthwhile.
Back in Kathmandu, we met with SP Kalaunee, the developer of an electronic health record system already running in Bayalpata and Amppipal. Our goal for Solu is to introduce this system here and connect the health posts digitally to Phaplu Hospital.
What that means in practice:
health post workers are not permitted to adjust a patient’s medication independently, that rests with the hospital. With a digital patient record, the hospital could send instructions directly to the health post. Patients would be spared a long journey.
The project will be implemented together with Nyaya Health Nepal. Whether Phaplu Hospital is on board, whether the health posts are ready, the next few days will tell.

Alle ausgewählten Fotografinnen und Fotografen werden im Kalender namentlich erwähnt und bekommen ein Exemplar. Die Einsendung der Fotos ist die Zustimmung, dass wir diese im Rahmen des Charity-Kalenders 2027 verwenden dürfen. Der Kalender erscheint ab September 2026.

Mitten in der Solu-Region hat Zahnarzt Ashok Magar in diesen Tagen bei zwei durchgeführten Health Camps insgesamt 183 Kinder untersucht. Es wurden Zähne kontrolliert, Körpergrößen gemessen und protokolliert. Bei 38 von ihnen wurden Zähne gezogen.
Wir waren diesmal nicht vor Ort und das braucht es auch nicht: Lokale Fachkräfte wie Ashok kennen die Menschen hier, sprechen ihre Sprache und haben ihr Vertrauen. „We‘re able to provide high-level dental care for a low price. We‘re very glad we can offer this much needed medical care to the community.“
Unsere Aufgabe ist es, mit den regelmäßigen Health Camps genau das möglich zu machen.

In the heart of the Solu region, dentist Ashok Magar has recently examined a total of 183 children at two health camps. Teeth were checked, and heights were measured and recorded. Thirty-eight of the children had teeth extracted.
We weren’t on site this time, and there’s no need for us to be: local professionals like Ashok know the people here, speak their language and have earned their trust. “We’re able to provide high-level dental care at a low price. We’re very glad we can offer this much-needed medical care to the community.”
Our mission is to make exactly that possible through our regular health camps.
